What building experience do I need to start this project?
None. Even if you can't attend our two days of training, the
building manual is clear and concise enough that you can start right away
and learn as you go.
I'm not very technical, will I be able to understand the builders manual?
Yes, the manual is one of the best in the industry. A lot of
time was spent in writing it to make sure it is clear and very easy to
understand. It takes you step by step through the building process and
is not just a set of plans for you to interpret.
Will I need to have worked with fiberglass before?
No, the techniques involved are clearly explained in the first
chapter of the manual, as well as demonstrated in the video.
What if I make a mistake?
There is hardly anything you can do in building, that cannot
be fixed. Chapter One covers repairs and fixes to fiberglass in detail.
Are there any workshops or seminars I can attend that will help me in
the building process?
Yes, besides the two days of training that we offer with each
kit, EAA sponsors the SportAir Workshop.
Do I need any special tools to build this airplane?
Most of the tools used in building are common hand tools, ranging
from sanding blocks to a saber saw. Additionally, you will need a drill
press, a good epoxy pump and a hotwire setup to cut the foam blocks. We
even include heavy duty scissors for cutting the fiberglass cloth.
What about jigs?
The manual includes detailed instructions for building all
the jigs necessary. In addition, full size templates are included for building
the wing jigs.
What kind of space do I need to build the Glass Goose in?
Up to the final attachment of the wings to the fuselage, all
the work could be accomplished in a two car garage.
Are there any safety precautions that I need to take working with composites?
While working with epoxy, you should wear rubber gloves. Sanding
and cutting the cured fiberglass parts definitely requires the use of a
rated respirator to protect you from inhaling the fine particles of glass.
Are there any quick build options?
The many pre-molded parts, and composite construction, make
the Goose a 'fast build' kit to begin with, but to further cut time we
offer several Quick Build Options. Please see Pricing.
What about Insurance?
If the kit is built according to plans and the builder has
not deviated from the original design, you should not have any problems
getting insurance.
Do I need a seaplane rating?
Not to build of course, but you will to be able to use it on
water.
